The history of Sozopol dates from 2600 years back, when the Asia-Minor Greeks from the city of Milet crossed over the Dardanelles and Bosporus and entered the Black Sea waters aiming at colonizing the wealthy and most civilized cities, inhabiting the coast. The Miletians conquered the towns of Ahtopol, Sozopol, Pomorie and further North, extending as far as the city of Varna. After the tako over of the peaceful Thracian settlements the Miletians had given them Greeks names and had the population submitted to their rule. The present-day city of Sozpol had been named Apolonia in honor to the Greek God Apollo. It is unknown what was its previous name. However, traces from monumental structures have been discovered that date long before the Miletians Greeks' incursion. It is certain that the city had a wealthy and cultural center from the ancient Thracians, who were involved in fishery, agriculture, vine-growing as well as the extraction (more precisely copper extraction). A significant proof of this is the Copper Statue of 15 meters height in honor of Apollo that the Miletians made upon their arrivel. Since it was not possible to transport the copper from the town Milet, they obtained it from the presently called Rosen mine.

          After some time the city of Apolonia was renamed to Sozpol, which means "city of Salvation" , due to the fact that the city has long been a host to the many seamen that disembarked ther during stormy weather.

           Sozopol is distinguieshed by its exceptional architecture. It is a city that accommodates artists, poets and people in love.
